Here's a simple recipe for a chocolate cake:

Ingredients:
- 1 and 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 2 teaspoons baking soda
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 2 large eggs
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 cup hot water
Instructions:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Grease two 9-inch round cake pans with butter and dust them with cocoa powder.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
- In a separate mixing bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla extract until well combined.
- Gradually pour the wet mixture into the dry mixture, whisking constantly until the batter is smooth and free of lumps.
- Stir in the hot water until it is fully incorporated into the batter.
- Pour the batter into the prepared cake pans, dividing it evenly between the two pans.
- Bake the cakes for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean.
- Remove the cakes from the oven and allow them to cool completely on a wire rack.
- Once cooled, remove the cakes from the pans and place one cake on a cake stand or serving platter.
- Spread a layer of frosting over the top of the cake, then place the second cake on top of the frosting.
- Spread another layer of frosting over the top and sides of the cake.
- Decorate the cake with your preferred toppings, such as shaved chocolate or fresh berries.
